The Chairman of Georgian Bar Association – Zaza Khatiashvili participated in the meeting with the
President of Georgia regarding the consultations referred to the candidate of Supreme Court. The
Chairman claimed:
“The President has invited representatives of NGOs for the consultations regarding the candidate of
Supreme Court. This is a very important event in the reality of Georgia. It must be noted that according
to the law, the President was not obliged to start consultations.
During my speech I fixed the position that the Chairman of the Supreme Court should be, a
principal, apolitical, educated person with clean background, which is completely agreed by
NGOs. I think that if the parliamentary majority doesn’t vote for the candidate selected after
consultations by the president, it will be another lustration for the ruling coalition. I want to
remind the civil society about the consultations of Prime-Minister – Irakli Garibashvili while
appointing the General Prosecutor. Not asking for anyone's opinion, he appointed
Partskhaladze - convicted for robbery on the position of General Prosecutor. Though, according
to the law, he was obliged to consult with the Minister of Justice regarding the candidate of
General Prosecutor”.
